I love the idea of shirts and dresses that make it easier to nurse in. I've never been a fan of the nursing covers or scarves, and lets be honest - whose baby will actually put up with those? Normally they start flailing their little limbs and unlatch, which results in your milk spraying everywhere and your boob suddenly exposed. While I personally am not ashamed of breastfeeding in public and could care less who sees my boobs (let's face it, during childbirth, everyone sees everything), there are women who would prefer to be a little more covered up. I get it! It's nice to be able to nurse your little one discreetly and conveniently.
While I love nursing clothes, it seems crazy that they are so expensive! Now I'm not sure about you, but I wasn't in a place financially after having a baby and being off work to purchase a $40 nursing shirt. I started looking to see if there were other options that would still give me the same end result - to nurse my baby discreetly.
Most common and best cost effective way is to do the 2 shirt method. Super easy. You just wear two shirts with a nursing bra, and lift up the top shirt, pull the bottom shirt below your breast and un-clip the nursing bra. Simple and effective. Now its not the greatest when its summer and like 100 out, so I started looking at other options.
Second best option is to purchase (or wear what you already have) some nursing friendly shirts. What type of shirts are nursing friendly? Below are a few of my favorite styles:

Second best option is to purchase (or wear what you already have) some nursing friendly shirts. What type of shirts are nursing friendly? Below are a few of my favorite styles:
- Anything that buttons down
- Deep V-neck
- Criss-Cross V-neck
- Stretchy necks (so you can pull down)
- Wrap around tops
Not interested in wearing 2 shirts? Some of my favorite retails have a line of nursing clothes that are super adorable and priced right, especially if you can hit up their sales. I've been able to find dresses, tanks, camis, shirts, sweaters and bras - and I've never paid more than $15. Some of my personal favorites are:
- H & M
- Old Navy
- Target
- Kohls
- Motherhood Maternity
Some of the more specific nursing retails allow you to sign up for their newsletter online and receive updates on upcoming sales and offer promo codes. Others, like Latched Mama, have an outlet online where you can find certain styles heavily discounted. Check out Latched Mama, Milk Nursingwear, Vida Leche Amor, Wren & Ivory and Pinkblush Maternity.
Also, don't forget to check out Facebook Marketplace, Facebook BST sites, Ebay, Mercari, Poshmark, Thred Up and Swap for some great deals! I recently found some great purchases for only $5!!
This was an $8 steal! Love this shirt. |
Hope these suggestions help make your breastfeeding journey that much more enjoyable!
Keep calm and nurse on!
